Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries $41.38 This is a comprehensive study of needlework tools from the 17th century to the Edwardian era. The format of the book groups the tools into periods and relates them to the style of embroidery fashionable at that time. The heavy silver needlework tools of the 17th century are related to the raised and padded embroidery of that era now known as stumpwork. The more delicate embroidery tools of the Georgian era are grouped together with fine embroideries. Palais Royal sewing boxes and their superb mother-of-pearl contents are illustrated, as are the glorious carved ivory needlework tools that originated from the Dieppe region of France. The Victorian lady chose her sewing box, work table or sewing set from the tremendous range available of which illustrated examples include tortoiseshell, papier mache, Tunbridge ware and Mauchline ware. The Edwardian era was the era of sterling silver and needlework tools of sterling silver were produced in enormous varieties. Many were English in origin but American silversmiths produced a vast variety of distinctive designs. |

The Rise and Fall of Art Needlework $25.66 In the nineteenth century a new needlework style ‘Art Embroidery’ gave rise to major commercial ventures of the time. The significance of these ventures is explored, particularly the contribution made by women employed in this industry. Auditing their working practices, then relating this to our understanding of gender history. These ventures stimulated the commercial side of embroidery in the late nineteenth century, by mobilising commercial activity through numerous agencies, department stores, depots and charitable institutions. A craft became a major industry, and in examining these important developments, the organisational structure of these enterprises, their marketing techniques in relationship to their predominantly female workforce, will be evaluated. The theme of business enterprise is a conduit which runs throughout, yet the work is not intended as an economic history, rather business history, as social history. The growth and development of ‘Art Embroidery’ in Britain circa 1870-1890 will be explored giving special consideration to the support received from the art establishment in designing for and educating embroiderers. Initially designing for the massive church building programme being conducted in Britain, the immense popularity of medieval and oriental designs employed in this work, lead also to a demand for secular work. As with all art, design changes are a derivative of social and political changes. These deterministic style changes were reliant upon imperialism, Said’s notion of ‘the other’, but perhaps more interestingly upon white man’s burden of manifest destiny, illustrated by Liberty department store. Finally, the decline of the embroidery business in theBritish Isles will be examined as work was sent overseas chasing cheaper labour in the colonies. Aiming to make a contribution to our understanding of the embroidery business, the book shows the dynamics shaping development and the role of women employed in the industry. In particular the economic significance of the embroidery business to female employment in the nineteenth century will be revealed, as it has been hidden from view, mainly due to employing outworkers, a hidden workforce. Though a social history, the thesis will demonstrate this hidden workforce made a contribution to the British economy. |

Decorative Needlework (Illustrated Edition) (Dodo Press) $14.3 Mary "May" Morris (1862-1938) was an English artisan, embroidery designer, socialist, and editor. May learned to embroider from her mother and her aunt Bessie Burden, who had been taught by Mary’s father William Morris (1834-1896). In 1881, she enrolled at the National Art Training School, the precursor of the Royal College of Art, to study embroidery. In 1885, aged 23, she became the director of the embroidery department at her father’s enterprise Morris & Co.. She edited her father’s Collected Works in 24 volumes for Longmans, Green and Company, published from 1910 to 1915. May Morris was an influential embroideress and designer, although her contributions are often overshadowed by those of her father, a towering figure in the Arts and Crafts movement. Morris himself is credited with the resurrection of freeform embroidery in the style which would be termed art needlework. May Morris was active in the Royal School of Art Needlework (now Royal School of Needlework), founded as a charity in 1872 under the patronage of Princess Helena to maintain and develop the art of needlework through structured apprenticeships. |
