To Tell the Truth Freely: The Life of Ida B. Wells (Hardcover) $26 A detailed profile of the civil rights pioneer traces her early life in Mississippi and Tennessee, her famous campaign for justice after being forced to give up her train seat in 1883, and her journalism work to fight lynching and racial injustice. Born to slaves in 1862, Ida B. Wells became a fearless antilynching crusader, women s rights advocate, journalist, and public speaker. Before she died in Chicago in 1931, Wells helped define the role of civil rights activist for every generation that followed. Mia Bay vividly captures Wells s childhood in Mississippi, early career in late-nineteenth-century Memphis, and later life in progressive-era Chicago. Her fight for justice began in 1883, when she was forcibly ejected from her train seat; Wells immediately sued and won in the local courts only to lose on appeal in the Supreme Court of Tennessee. Her published account of her legal challenge to Jim Crow, however, launched her on a career as an outspoken journalist and social activist. When friends were lynched in Memphis, Wells s public protests put her own life in peril. It also inspired her to lead an international crusade against lynching. Resettled in Chicago, Wells continued her militant quest for racial justice, leading her to reject Booker T. Washington s accommodationism and the moderating influence of white reformers within the early NAACP. Her refusal to accept any compromise on racial inequality labeled her a dangerous radical in her day, but made her a model for later civil rights activists, as well as a powerful witness to the racial politics of her era. |

Thomas’ rival is the bigger (and meaner) Diesel Ten, who has already put one of Thomas’ allied engines, The Lady, out of commission. Without The Lady, the Conductor has no source for the magic gold dust that allows him to travel from Sodor to Shining Time in the wink of an eye, so Lily and Thomas have to find a way to find more for him.
